Wow, she's got her own building!

Greetings:

Here stands The War Department in the doorway of one of her houses. This one is located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The photograph was taken Tuesday, July 12, 2011, our thirty-sixth wedding anniversary (no parole).

We were holed up at the KOA Kampground in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. We had crossed the bridge into the US the previous day with the intent of taking the boat tour of the lock system on the St. Mary River, between Great Lakes Superior and Huron [There is a twenty-one foot (6.4 meter) difference in elevation between the lakes]. We were met with torrential rain. We returned the following day, took this photograph, and enjoyed a pleasant boat tour of the locks.

The Army Corps improved the locks to accommodate larger iron ore bearing ships needed for war production. Note the date on the cornerstone to the right of the doorway. This was considered a very strategic area during World War II. It was swarming with military guarding the locks. More recently locks have been built to accommodate ships with a keel of 1,000 feet (305 meters).

The photograph has been processed in Adobe Photoshop CS4 to correct for perspective distortion -- mainly a doorway that tapered inward with elevation. The beauty of desktop photographic processing is the elimination for the need of a view (bellows) camera. In the old days, tilting the film plane away from the top of the image, then stopping down the aperture to increase the depth of field to keep everything in focus would be necessary to achieve the same effect. With Photoshop, just skewing the frame in the Transform mode until the door frame appears plumb does the trick.
